Drive the Nichinan coast of Miyazaki: Udo Shrine inside a sea cave, the Devil's Washboard rocks at Aoshima, and the Moai statues of Sun Messe.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private tour, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Nichinan coast in the south of Miyazaki is warm, green and wild, with palm trees and big Pacific waves.
Udo Jingu is a bright red shrine built inside a cave in the cliffs, just above the sea. You walk down the steps to the cave. Below, by the rocks, people try to throw small clay balls into a hollow on a turtle-shaped rock, for good luck.
Aoshima is a small island linked to land by a bridge. Around it lies the Devil's Washboard, long lines of flat rock that look like a giant washboard at low tide. In the middle of the island is a shrine in a jungle of palm trees.
Sun Messe Nichinan is a hillside park with seven Moai statues facing the sea. They are the only Moai replicas made with official permission from Easter Island.
You also walk Obi, a small castle town with stone walls, old samurai houses and quiet streets.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Sun Messe Nichinan is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Obi castle town, with its stone walls and old samurai houses.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel and drive west to Okayama (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).

Said plainly
Sun Messe Nichinan usually closes on Wednesdays. We plan the days around this. The steps at Udo Jingu are steep. If Sun Messe Nichinan is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Obi castle town, with its stone walls and old samurai houses. This tour has long driving days. The van has comfortable seats and we stop every 2 hours or so for rest areas, food and toilets.
