The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Iya Valley in western Tokushima is one of the three most hidden valleys in Japan. Steep green mountains rise above a clear river, and small farm villages cling to the slopes.
On day 2 you ride a sightseeing boat through Oboke Gorge, past smooth rock walls carved by the Yoshino River. Then you visit Iya Kazurabashi, a bridge made from wild vines, about 45 meters long, hanging over the river. Walking across is a little shaky, and you can see the water between the wooden slats.
On day 3 you drive deeper into the valley to Nagoro. Here one local woman began making life-size scarecrow dolls, and now they outnumber the people. You see them sitting at bus stops, working in fields and filling an old school classroom. You also see the steep farm slopes and old thatched houses of the upper valley.
Your English-speaking driver-guide drives the narrow mountain roads with care and explains valley life.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the Oboke Gorge boat or the vine bridge is closed on your date (for example after heavy rain), you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk a riverside viewpoint trail in the valley.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive toward Shikoku, overnight on the way (about 8 hours of driving).
DAY 2 Drive into Iya. Oboke Gorge boat ride and Iya Kazurabashi vine bridge.
DAY 3 Nagoro scarecrow village and the upper Iya Valley, then drive to the Kobe area for the night.
DAY 4 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).

Mountain roads in Iya are narrow and winding. Guests who get car sick should bring medicine. The vine bridge sways and has gaps between the slats. It may not suit people afraid of heights. Best from April to November. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form. If the Oboke Gorge boat or the vine bridge is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk a riverside viewpoint trail in the valley.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
