The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Omagari National Fireworks Competition in Daisen, Akita, is the most famous fireworks contest in Japan. Top fireworks makers from all over the country compete. It is held on the last Saturday of August each year.
The show has two parts. In the late afternoon there are day fireworks, with colored smoke in the sky. After dark comes the night show, with the makers' best work and a huge wide finale over the Omono River.
On this tour you have a reserved paid seat in the official viewing area. Your seat is included in the price.
Before the show you visit Kakunodate, a samurai town with wide streets and black wooden walls. You visit the Aoyagi family samurai house, with its armour, swords and old items.
On the way back you see Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan, with its blue water and gold statue of Tatsuko.
This is a date-fixed product. In 2026 the date is 29 August. In 2027 it is expected on 28 August.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Omagari Fireworks Competition is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead drive to Lake Tazawa and the Nyuto Onsen area, and walk Kakunodate at a slower pace.
DAY 1 (Friday before the show) Pickup at your Tokyo hotel and drive to Kakunodate (about 7 to 8 hours with breaks). Evening walk on the samurai street.
DAY 2 (Saturday) Aoyagi samurai house, then the Omagari day and night fireworks from your reserved seat.
DAY 3 Lake Tazawa in the morning, then drive back to your Tokyo hotel (about 8 hours with breaks).
