The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Shimonoseki, at the western tip of Honshu, is the fugu capital of Japan. Most of the country's pufferfish passes through its markets. Locals name it fuku, which sounds like the word for good luck.
On day 2 you visit Karato Market by the harbor, a busy fish market with sushi stalls. Then you sit down to a fugu lunch prepared by licensed chefs: thin sashimi slices laid out like a flower, fried fugu and hot pot. Fugu is only served by licensed chefs in Japan and is safe to eat.
In the afternoon you visit Akama Shrine, a bright red shrine for the child emperor Antoku, with a dragon-palace style gate. Then you walk the Kanmon pedestrian tunnel, under the sea strait, about 780 meters long, and cross from Yamaguchi to Fukuoka on foot. Your van meets you on the other side.
In Mojiko Retro you walk past old brick and western-style buildings from the early 1900s by the port.

If the fugu restaurant is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead have the fugu lunch at another licensed fugu restaurant in Shimonoseki.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive west, overnight on the way (about 8 hours of driving).
DAY 2 Drive on to Shimonoseki. Evening free by the strait.
DAY 3 Karato Market, fugu lunch, Akama Shrine, Kanmon tunnel walk and Mojiko Retro.
DAY 4 Drive east, overnight on the way.
DAY 5 Continue the drive and arrive back at your Tokyo hotel in the evening.

If you prefer, we can instead have the fugu lunch at another licensed fugu restaurant in Shimonoseki.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
