The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The north coast of Yamaguchi has some of the most striking views in western Japan.
On day 2 you visit Motonosumi Shrine, where 123 red torii gates run down a green cliff toward the blue Sea of Japan. At the top, the offering box is set high on a big torii, and people try to throw coins into it. Then you drive across Tsunoshima Bridge, a long bridge that curves over clear blue water to Tsunoshima island. Stop at the lighthouse and the beaches.
On day 3 you visit Akiyoshido, one of the largest limestone caves in Japan. A walking path of about 1 km goes through huge halls, past an underground river and rimstone pools like terraced rice fields. Then you drive up to Akiyoshidai, a wide grass plateau dotted with white limestone rocks, with a viewing deck over the karst.
Your English-speaking driver-guide drives the van along the coast and explains how the cave and plateau formed. This is a long drive, so the trip is spread over five days.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If Akiyoshido Cave is closed on your date (for example after heavy rain), you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another limestone cave of the same kind nearby.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive west, overnight on the way (about 8 hours of driving).
DAY 2 Drive on to the north coast. Motonosumi Shrine and Tsunoshima Bridge and island.
DAY 3 Akiyoshido Cave walk and the Akiyoshidai plateau viewpoint.
DAY 4 Drive east, overnight on the way.
DAY 5 Continue the drive and arrive back at your Tokyo hotel in the evening.
