The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Bitchu Matsuyama Castle in Takahashi, Okayama, sits on a mountain at about 430 meters. It is the highest castle in Japan with its original keep still standing. On cool mornings a sea of clouds can fill the valley below.
On day 2 you go early to the Unkai viewpoint across the valley for a chance to see the castle above the clouds. The sea of clouds is a natural event and is never guaranteed. Later you walk up the mountain path to the castle and see the old keep and stone walls. In the afternoon you explore Takahashi, a castle town with samurai houses and old streets.
On day 3 you visit Fukiya, a mountain village that grew rich from copper and bengara, a red iron-oxide pigment. The houses have red walls and red roof tiles. You walk the old tunnels of the Sasaune copper mine and see the Bengara Museum, where the pigment was made.

This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another castle of the same kind in Okayama.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Takahashi (about 9 hours with breaks). Early night.
DAY 2 Dawn trip to the Unkai viewpoint, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and Takahashi castle town.
DAY 3 Fukiya red town, Sasaune copper mine tunnels and the Bengara Museum.
DAY 4 Morning departure and the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).

The sea of clouds is never guaranteed. October to March gives the best chance, mostly on cool, clear mornings. The castle path is steep, about 20 minutes uphill on foot. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form. If Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another castle of the same kind in Okayama.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
