The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Minabe and Tanabe in Wakayama grow more ume plums than anywhere else in Japan. The hills are covered with orchards, and the pickled plums made here, Kishu umeboshi, are known all over the country.
On day 2 you visit an orchard in Minabe and join an umeboshi workshop. You learn how plums are salted and dried in the sun, and make a small jar to take home. In February and March the orchards are white with plum blossoms. In June you can see the harvest.
Next you stop at Kuroshio Market in Wakayama, a large seafood market by the sea where you can choose a fresh seafood lunch.
On day 3 you visit Shirahama on the Pacific coast. Walk on Senjojiki, a wide shelf of layered sandstone rock above the sea, and go down into Sandanbeki, a sea cave at the foot of 50-meter cliffs. Shirahama also has a white-sand beach.
Your English-speaking driver-guide explains farm life and food culture. Umeboshi are a plant food. Seafood lunches are common, but halal-certified food cannot be guaranteed.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the orchard workshop or Sandanbeki cave is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another plum farm shop with a tasting.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to the Minabe-Tanabe area (about 8 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Minabe plum orchard and umeboshi workshop, then Kuroshio Market lunch stop.
DAY 3 Senjojiki rock shelf and Sandanbeki sea cave in Shirahama, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (late evening arrival).
