The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kinosaki Onsen is a small hot spring town on the Sea of Japan side of Hyogo. A willow-lined canal runs through the center, with stone bridges and old wooden inns. The town has seven public bathhouses, and the custom is to walk between them in a yukata and geta sandals.
On day 2 you get a day pass for the public baths and visit them at your own pace with your guide nearby. Each bath has its own style, from cave baths to open-air pools. You also ride the Kinosaki Ropeway up Mount Daishi for a view over the town and the river valley.
On the way you stop at Genbudo, a park with tall cliffs of six-sided basalt columns made by an old lava flow.
On day 3 you visit Izushi, a small castle town known as the little Kyoto of Tajima. See the wooden clock tower Shinkoro and the castle walls, and eat Izushi sarasoba, buckwheat noodles served on small plates.
In winter (November to March) the coast is known for snow crab. Your driver-guide speaks English and helps with bath manners.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the public baths are closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another hot spring town of the same kind nearby.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Kinosaki (about 8 hours with breaks). Evening walk by the canal.
DAY 2 Seven-bath crawl with a day pass, Kinosaki Ropeway and Genbudo basalt cliffs.
DAY 3 Izushi castle town and sarasoba lunch, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (late evening arrival).

Said plainly
The drive from Tokyo is long, about 8 hours each way with breaks. Tattoo rules can differ by bath. Your guide will tell you the rule before the tour. Most inns lend yukata to their guests. Bring a small towel or buy one in town. Each public bath has its own closed day, so not all seven may be open on your date. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form. If the public baths are closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another hot spring town of the same kind nearby.
