The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Nagoya was the home of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family, one of the three great branches of the shoguns' clan. Their treasures are kept at the Tokugawa Art Museum: suits of samurai armour, fine swords, tea wares and famous scrolls of the Tale of Genji. The armour and swords on show change with each exhibition. Entry is included, and the Tokugawa-en garden is next door.
At Nagoya Castle we visit the Honmaru Palace, rebuilt with traditional methods and cypress wood, with painted sliding doors and gold leaf. Entry is included. The main keep itself is closed for rebuilding, so you see it from the outside.
At Atsuta Jingu, one of Japan's most important shrines, the sacred sword Kusanagi is said to be kept. It is never shown to anyone. In the shrine's treasure hall you can see swords given to the shrine over the centuries. Entry is included.
Your guide explains how armour and swords were made and used, and how to look at a blade. You book your own hotel in Nagoya.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One family or group of 1 to 6 people per van, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Tokugawa Art Museum is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Nagoya City Museum and spend more time at Atsuta Jingu and Nagoya Castle.
DAY 1 Hotel pickup in Tokyo and drive to Nagoya (about 4 to 5 hours). Afternoon: Nagoya Castle and the Honmaru Palace.
DAY 2 Tokugawa Art Museum and garden, Atsuta Jingu and its treasure hall, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
