The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Wazuka is a quiet mountain town south of Kyoto, where green tea fields cover the hillsides. It grows a large part of the famous Uji tea, but few visitors go there. Uji, closer to the city, is where matcha culture grew.
On Day 1 we drive from Tokyo to Uji, about 6 hours. You stay in Uji or Kyoto.
On Day 2 we drive to Wazuka, about 40 minutes. We walk the tea terraces with your guide, with views of the rolling green rows. At a tea farm you learn how the tea is grown and made, and taste different teas brewed by the farmers. In the picking season you can try picking leaves. The farm visit is included. We return to Uji in the afternoon.
On Day 3 we visit Fukujuen Uji Kobo in Uji. You grind tea leaves into matcha with a stone mill, then whisk and drink your own matcha. The workshop is included. Then we visit Byodoin, a UNESCO World Heritage temple, and its Phoenix Hall, the building on the Japanese 10 yen coin. Entry is included. We drive back to Tokyo in the afternoon.
This tour runs about April to October. The first harvest is in May.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the tea farm or the Uji workshop is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead join another tea farm visit in Wazuka or another tea workshop in Uji.
