This is your private tour, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Momotaro, the boy born from a peach who fights the demons, is Japan's best-known folk tale. In Okayama it is linked to a real legend: the prince Kibitsuhiko, who fought a demon called Ura in the ancient Kibi kingdom. This tour follows that story to the real places.
Kibitsu Shrine has a main hall that is a National Treasure and a long, covered corridor of about 360 m that runs down the hillside. Kibitsuhiko Shrine is the shrine of the prince himself. We travel along the old Kibi road. The bicycle rental or local guide fee for this road is included.
The Kibi kingdom was strong over 1,500 years ago. Tsukuriyama is one of the largest keyhole burial mounds in Japan, and you can walk on top of it. Bitchu Kokubunji has a five-storey pagoda that rises over the rice fields.
Last, we climb to Kinojo, an ancient mountain fortress with stone walls and a rebuilt west gate. Legend says it was the castle of the demon Ura. There is a walk on hill paths.
Okayama is about 700 km from Tokyo, so Day 1 and Day 4 are long driving days. You book your own hotel in Okayama or Soja.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One family or group of 1 to 6 people per van, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Bitchu Kokubunji or the Kinojo fortress is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit Kibitsuhiko Shrine, the Kibi road sites and Okayama castle town.
DAY 1 Hotel pickup in Tokyo and the long drive to Okayama (about 8.5 hours).
DAY 2 Kibitsu Shrine and its corridor, Kibitsuhiko Shrine, and the Kibi road.
DAY 3 Tsukuriyama burial mound, Bitchu Kokubunji pagoda and the Kinojo mountain fortress.
DAY 4 The drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
