The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Tokachi is Hokkaido's big farming plain, with wide fields, forests and the Hidaka Mountains. It is home to some of Japan's best gardens and to butadon, a grilled pork rice bowl born in Obihiro.
On Day 1 we drive from Tokyo to Oarai port, about 2 hours, and board the evening ferry. The crossing takes about 18 hours, in a cabin berth.
On Day 2 we arrive in Tomakomai in the afternoon and drive to Obihiro, about 3 hours. For dinner you try butadon, sweet soy grilled pork on rice, at a local restaurant. It is included.
On Day 3 we visit Tokachi Millennium Forest in Shimizu. It is a large garden made with British designer Dan Pearson, with meadows, a forest garden and a farm garden, set against the mountains. Entry is included. In the afternoon we visit Ikeda, a wine town. At Ikeda Wine Castle you see the town's wine story. Tasting is optional, and grape juice is there for non-drinkers.
On Day 4 we stop at the old Kofuku station south of Obihiro, a small closed railway station known for its lucky name. Then we drive to Tomakomai for the evening ferry.
On Day 5 we arrive in Oarai around midday and drive back to Tokyo.
Halal: butadon is pork and not halal. We can choose a non-pork dinner for you instead.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Tokachi Millennium Forest is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit Manabe Garden in Obihiro.

No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
