The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Tajima is a small town in the mountains of Minamiaizu, in Fukushima. Every July it holds the Tajima Gion Festival, a summer festival with a long history. Wooden floats are pulled through the old streets, people in traditional dress walk in a procession, and children perform kabuki on the floats.
The festival runs every year on 22, 23 and 24 July. This tour runs only on those dates.
On Day 1 we drive from Tokyo to Minamiaizu, about 4 hours. In the afternoon and evening you watch the festival in Tajima. Street viewing is free, and your guide explains what is happening and finds good places to stand.
On Day 2 we see the morning festival events in town, then drive to Ouchi-juku, an Edo-period post town with thatched-roof houses lined along one wide street. Many visitors try negi soba here, buckwheat noodles eaten with a long green onion instead of chopsticks. Your soba lunch is included. Then we drive back to Tokyo, about 4 hours.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Tajima Gion Festival is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit Ouchi-juku and the To-no-hetsuri river cliffs on another summer date.
