The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Seikan Tunnel runs under the sea between Honshu and Hokkaido. It is about 54 km long and took over 20 years to build. At Cape Tappi, the northern tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula, the Seikan Tunnel Museum tells the story of the people who built it.
On Day 1 we drive from Tokyo to Aomori. This is a long drive, about 8 to 9 hours with rest stops. You stay in Aomori city.
On Day 2 we drive up the Tsugaru Peninsula to Cape Tappi, about 1.5 hours. At the museum you see the machines, models and films of the build. Then you ride a small slope car down into the real tunnel works below the ground, used during construction. Entry and the ride are included. After that we walk Cape Tappi. From the cape you can see Hokkaido on a clear day. We also walk National Route 339 at the cape, a short part of a national road that is a stairway, the only one like it in Japan. In the afternoon we drive back to Aomori.
On Day 3 we drive back to Tokyo, again a long drive.
The museum is open about mid-April to early November. This tour runs in that season.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Seikan Tunnel Museum is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Aomori Bay area and the Hakkoda mountains instead.
