The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Jomon people lived in Japan for more than 10,000 years, as hunters, fishers and gatherers. They made some of the oldest pottery in the world and strange clay figures called dogu. In 2021 the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many of them are in Aomori. This 3-day trip shows you the best ones.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north on the Tohoku Expressway, with rest stops. You reach Aomori city in the evening.
On day 2 you visit Sannai-Maruyama, one of the largest Jomon villages in Japan. You walk among rebuilt pit houses, a long hall and a tall six-pillar wooden tower. In the museum you see pottery, tools and many dogu found here. In the afternoon you drive west to Tsugaru city and the Kamegaoka site. This is where the famous goggle-eyed dogu was found. The original is kept in Tokyo, but here you see the site and local finds in a small museum. You also stop at Kizukuri Station, whose front is shaped like a giant goggle-eyed dogu. You end the day on the Tsugaru coast and return to Aomori.
On day 3 you drive south and stop in Hachinohe at Korekawa Jomon-kan. Here you see the Gassho Dogu, a dogu with its hands together, which is a National Treasure of Japan. Then you drive back to your Tokyo hotel, arriving in the evening.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. If one of the museums is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another Jomon World Heritage site in Aomori.
