The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
In the coldest months, wind and frozen fog cover the fir trees on the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori with thick ice and snow. The trees turn into strange white shapes, called snow monsters. Below the peaks lies Sukayu Onsen, an old hot spring inn famous for its huge wooden bath. This 3-day winter trip brings you to both.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north on the Tohoku Expressway, with rest stops. It is a long drive, and you reach Aomori in the evening.
On day 2 you drive up into the snow to the Hakkoda Ropeway. The cable car climbs to the summit park station in about 10 minutes. At the top you walk out among the snow monsters and, on clear days, see over Mutsu Bay. Then you go down to Sukayu Onsen and bathe in the Sen-nin-buro, the thousand-person bath. It is a large hall made of Aomori hiba cypress, with cloudy, acidic water. In the afternoon you drive past Tsuta Onsen to the upper Oirase stream, where waterfalls freeze into long ice columns in winter. You return to Aomori for the night.
On day 3 you drive back south to your Tokyo hotel, arriving in the evening.
The trip runs from January to March, when the snow monsters form.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. If the Hakkoda Ropeway is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead see the frozen waterfalls of the Oirase Gorge for longer.

If the Hakkoda Ropeway is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead see the frozen waterfalls of the Oirase Gorge for longer The Sen-nin-buro is a traditional mixed bath. Sukayu also has smaller separate baths for men and women It can be below minus 10 degrees at the top. Bring a warm coat, hat, gloves and snow boots

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
