The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
On 11 March 2011, a great earthquake and tsunami struck the coast of Fukushima, and a nuclear accident followed. Many people had to leave their homes. Today towns along this coast are slowly coming back to life. This day trip is a quiet, respectful visit to learn what happened and how people are rebuilding. It is a serious tour, best for travellers who want to understand recent Japanese history.
Your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo in the early morning and drives north along the Joban Expressway, with rest stops. The drive takes about 3 to 4 hours each way. Your route uses normal public roads that are open to everyone.
Your first stop is the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum in Futaba. Its exhibits, films and real objects tell the story of the disaster and the evacuation. Plan around 90 minutes here. Next you visit the ruins of Ukedo Elementary School in Namie. All the children and teachers escaped the tsunami, and the damaged building now stands as a memorial. After lunch on the Joban coast, you visit Tomioka, a town that has reopened in recent years. You see its long cherry tree street, called the Sakura Tunnel, and learn about life in the town today.
In the late afternoon you drive back to your Tokyo hotel. The whole tour takes about 12 hours.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. If the memorial museum is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another public disaster archive on the same coast.
