The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Enburi is a winter festival in Hachinohe, Aomori, held every year from 17 to 20 February. Dancers wear tall hats shaped like a horse's head and move slowly with wooden tools. The dance asks for a good rice harvest in the coming year and welcomes spring in the coldest weeks. Enburi is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. On this 3-day trip you see it with a reserved viewing seat.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north on the Tohoku Expressway, with rest stops. You reach Hachinohe by the evening.
On day 2 you join the festival. In the morning you watch Enburi groups dance in the city centre. Your guide explains what the moves and costumes mean. For lunch you visit Hachinohe Hasshoku Center, a big market of fresh fish and local food. In the afternoon you drive along the snowy Tanesashi Coast. In the evening you watch an Enburi show from your reserved seat. Before or after, you can join a local sake tasting. A non-alcoholic tasting of local drinks is offered for drivers and non-drinkers.
On day 3 you drive back south to your Tokyo hotel.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. This trip runs only during Enburi, 17 to 20 February. If the Enburi show is cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead watch the street Enburi dances held in the city on the same day.
