The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Ichinoseki in Iwate has two beautiful gorges and a rich mochi food culture. This private 2-day trip from Tokyo, run from April to November, lets you enjoy both at an easy pace.
At Geibikei Gorge you ride a flat wooden boat pushed by a boatman with a long pole. Cliffs rise high above the calm river. On the way back the boatman sings a local folk song that echoes off the rocks. At the turning point you can try to throw a lucky stone into a hole in the cliff.
At Genbikei Gorge the river has carved deep pools and potholes in the rock. A small shop on the far side sends dango sweets across the gorge in a basket on a rope. Your guide puts the payment in the basket (it is included in your tour), knocks a board, and your dango and tea fly back to you.
Ichinoseki is famous for mochi. At lunch you try a mochi meal with many small dishes, from sweet to savoury.
We also stop at a local sake brewery to learn about sake and taste a little. Non-alcoholic drinks are offered for drivers and non-drinkers.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
