The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Seto in Aichi has made pottery for over 1,000 years. It is so famous that in Japanese, 'setomono' became a word for all ceramics. This private 2-day trip from Tokyo explores the town and lets you make a piece of your own.
The Seto Kura Museum shows the history of Seto ware, with an old-style workshop, a tall kiln and a station from the old pottery train line. It is a clear start to the story.
The Kamagaki-no-komichi is a narrow path lined with walls made from old kiln tools and broken pots. It winds through the hills past workshops and old houses.
At a local studio you join a pottery workshop and make your own cup or bowl. It is fired later and shipped to you.
There is time for the shops by the river, where you can buy pottery straight from local makers.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the workshop is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
Day 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Seto (about 4 hours 30 minutes). Afternoon at the Seto Kura Museum and the Kamagaki-no-komichi path. Evening free in Seto.
Day 2 Morning pottery workshop and time in the pottery shops. Afternoon drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
