The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Toyama has made glass for over 100 years, starting with bottles for its famous medicine trade. Today it is a city of glass art. This private 2-day trip from Tokyo takes you to its best glass places and lets you make your own piece.
The Toyama Glass Art Museum is in a building designed by architect Kengo Kuma, with warm wood inside. It shows modern glass art from Japan and the world, including a glass garden by the American artist Dale Chihuly.
At a local glass studio you try glassblowing with the help of a glass artist. You choose the shape and colour of a cup or small vase. It cools overnight and is ready the next day or shipped to you.
Kansui Park is a canal park in the centre of Toyama, with a red bridge and wide lawns. On clear days you can see the Tateyama mountains behind the city.
We stay one night in Toyama, so there is no rush.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the glass studio is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Toyama (about 5 hours). Afternoon at the Toyama Glass Art Museum and Kansui Park. Evening free in Toyama.
DAY 2 Morning glassblowing at a glass studio. Afternoon drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
