The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Takaoka in Toyama has been a city of metal casting for about 400 years. Most of Japan's bronze temple bells and statues are made here. Nearby Inami is famous for fine woodcarving. This private 2-day trip from Tokyo brings you into both craft towns.
Kanayamachi is the old casting district of Takaoka, with a stone-paved street and wooden lattice houses. You visit a casting workshop and pour your own small piece in tin, guided by a local craftsperson.
The Takaoka Great Buddha is a bronze statue about 16 metres tall, made by local casters and counted among the three great Buddhas of Japan.
In Inami, the main street leading to Zuisenji temple is lined with woodcarving studios. You can watch carvers at work and see the huge carved panels of the temple.
We stay one night in Takaoka, so both towns can be seen at an easy pace.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.

DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Takaoka (about 5 hours). Afternoon at the Takaoka Great Buddha and the Kanayamachi casting district. Evening free in Takaoka.
DAY 2 Morning tin casting workshop, then the woodcarving street and Zuisenji temple in Inami. Afternoon drive back to your Tokyo hotel.

Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
