The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Wakasa coast of Fukui faces the Sea of Japan. It has an old port with an important human story, a craft found in many Japanese homes, and five lakes in green hills. This private 3-day trip from Tokyo explores all of them.
The Port of Humanity Tsuruga museum tells two stories of people who arrived here by ship: Polish orphans from Siberia in the 1920s, and Jewish refugees in 1940 who held transit visas from the diplomat Chiune Sugihara. It is a calm and moving visit.
Kehi Jingu is the main shrine of Tsuruga, with a large red torii gate. The old pine coast of Kehi no Matsubara is close by.
Obama in Wakasa makes most of the lacquered chopsticks in Japan. At a chopstick workshop you see how layers of lacquer and shell are polished, and you polish a pair of your own to take home.
The Mikata Five Lakes are five lakes of different colours. The Rainbow Line road climbs to a hilltop park where you see the lakes and the sea together.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If a core site is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
