The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Echizen area of Fukui has kept three old crafts alive for centuries: handmade washi paper, forged knives and pottery. This private 3-day trip from Tokyo gives you a full day with the makers, and time to try two of the crafts yourself.
Echizen Washi Village has made paper for about 1,500 years. You see how paper is made from plant fibres and then make your own sheet of washi to take home.
Takefu Knife Village is a shared workshop of local blacksmiths. From the open gallery you watch the smiths forge and grind blades. Echizen knives are famous for their sharp edge, and the shop has many styles to see.
In Echizen Pottery Village you visit kilns and a museum about one of Japan's oldest pottery traditions. You then join a hand-building workshop and shape your own cup or bowl. It is fired and shipped later.
Fukui is a long drive from Tokyo. Day 1 and day 3 are mostly travel days, with rest stops on the expressway.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If a workshop is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
Day 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Echizen in Fukui (about 6 hours). Evening free in Echizen.
Day 2 Washi papermaking at Echizen Washi Village, the smiths of Takefu Knife Village, and a pottery workshop in Echizen Pottery Village.
Day 3 Morning free time for craft shops, then drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
