The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

The SCMaglev and Railway Park in Nagoya is the railway museum of JR Central. It tells the story of Japan's high-speed trains, from the first Shinkansen to the superconducting maglev. This 2-day private trip from Tokyo gives you a full visit, plus two of Nagoya's best-known sights.

Inside the large hall you walk among real trains. There is a record-setting maglev test car, early and modern Shinkansen cars, and older steam and electric trains. You can step inside many cars. A big model railway shows a day in the life of the line, and there are driving simulators.

Nagoya Castle was built for the Tokugawa family in the early 1600s. The rebuilt Hommaru Palace is decorated with painted sliding doors and gold. The grounds, stone walls and moats are wide and good for a slow walk.

Atsuta Shrine is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan. It is said to keep the sacred sword Kusanagi, one of the three imperial regalia. The shrine stands in a quiet forest of old camphor trees in the middle of the city.

The drive from Tokyo to Nagoya is about 4 hours. With one night in Nagoya you have time for the museum without hurrying.

Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.

This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.

If the railway museum is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
