The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
East Aichi has three very different places close together: a famous temple full of foxes, a sacred mountain in deep forest, and the field where a battle in 1575 changed how samurai fought. This 2-day private trip from Tokyo visits all three.
Toyokawa Inari is a Zen Buddhist temple that also honours the fox spirit of Inari. Its best-known corner is the Fox Mound, a quiet hillside covered with hundreds of stone foxes left by visitors over many years. The main halls and gates are large and full of wood carving.
Mount Horaiji is an old mountain temple in tall cedar forest. A long stone stairway of more than 1,400 steps leads up through the trees. You can climb as far as you like. There is also a road near the top for those who prefer a shorter walk.
At Nagashino in 1575, the armies of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu used lines of guns behind wooden fences to defeat the Takeda cavalry. Today you can see the ruins of Nagashino Castle, a small museum and a rebuilt section of the wooden fence on the battlefield.
We stay one night in the Toyokawa area so each day has time to walk and look, not just drive.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
