The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Iwamura Castle in Ena, Gifu, was built on a mountain at about 717 m. It is counted as one of the three great mountain castles of Japan. The wooden buildings are gone, but tall stone walls still climb the slope in many layers. In the Sengoku period the castle was once ruled by a woman, Lady Otsuya, a story that people in the town still tell.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive west, about 4.5 hours. In the afternoon we walk the old merchant street of Iwamura, with its white walls, wooden shops and indigo curtains. Then we drive near the top and walk up to the castle ruins through the forest. The stone walls appear one by one between the trees. You stay overnight in the Ena area.
On Day 2 we go to Enakyo Gorge, a lake made by a dam on the Kiso River. Strange rocks and steep cliffs line the water. You take a boat cruise of about 30 minutes through the gorge. The cruise ticket is included. Your guide tells you the names of the rocks.
After lunch we drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.

The Enakyo boat can stop in bad weather or high water If the Enakyo Gorge boat cruise is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Enakyo lakeside path and viewpoints, or visit the old post town of Magome The castle path is steep and rocky. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the car park. Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
