The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Gujo Hachiman is a small castle town in the mountains of Gifu. Clear rivers and spring water run through its streets, and people still wash vegetables in the stone channels. The town also makes most of Japan's food samples, the plastic dishes you see in restaurant windows.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive west, about 5 hours. We arrive in the afternoon and walk the old town. You see the Igawa Komichi lane with its water channel, the Sogi-sui spring, and the Yoshida River, where local children jump from the bridge in summer. In July to early September, you may also see Gujo Odori, a summer dance in the street that anyone can join. You stay overnight in Gujo Hachiman.
On Day 2 we start with a food sample workshop at Sample Kobo. Using hot wax and simple tools, you make a tempura shrimp and a head of lettuce that look real. The workshop fee is included. Then we climb to Gujo Hachiman Castle, a wooden keep on a hill above the town. Castle entry is included. From the top you see the whole town and the rivers.
After lunch we drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.

Can we change the route on the day?
Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
