The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Niigata was one of five ports opened to world trade in 1868. Ships brought rice merchants and wealth, and the Furumachi district grew into a busy entertainment quarter. Here, geigi, the Niigata name for geisha, still train in traditional dance, song and music. Furumachi geigi are one of the few geisha traditions that remain in Japan.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive north, about 3.5 hours. In the afternoon we visit the Northern Culture Museum, the huge wooden mansion and garden of the Ito family, once the largest landowners in Niigata. Entry is included. In the evening you watch a performance by Furumachi geigi. Your seat at the performance is included. You see classical dances and hear the music, and the geigi may share a short talk about their life. You stay overnight in Niigata city.
On Day 2 we walk around the old port area. You see the former Niigata Customs House from 1869, one of the few customs buildings from that time still standing, and walk along the Shinano River, the longest river in Japan. Then we walk the streets of Furumachi by day, with old wooden restaurants and teahouses.
After lunch we drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
