The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Itoigawa on the Niigata coast is Japan's first UNESCO Global Geopark. It sits on the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, the great fault that splits Japan into east and west. It is also the home of Japanese jade, used by people here for about 7,000 years.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive north-west, about 4.5 hours. In the afternoon we visit the Fossa Magna Museum. It explains how Japan was formed and shows a large collection of jade, minerals and fossils. Entry is included. Then we go to a jade beach on the coast. Small green stones wash up on the shore, and you can look for jade pebbles with your guide. Picking up stones on these beaches is allowed. You stay overnight in Itoigawa.
On Day 2 we drive up the Kotaki River to the Kotaki River Jade Gorge. Here huge jade boulders sit in the river below the cliffs of Mount Myojo. This is a natural monument, so the stones can only be viewed. Then we drive to the Oyashirazu coast, where steep cliffs drop straight into the sea. Travelers on the old road once had to run between the waves under the cliffs. A viewpoint shows the coast from above.
After lunch we drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
