The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Niigata is known across Japan for rice, sake and seafood. This day trip visits two of its most loved local food stops, one in the hills and one on the sea.
We pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive north, about 3.5 hours. Our first stop is Tochio, a small town in the hills of Nagaoka. Tochio is famous for aburaage, fried tofu, but here it is about three times the size of normal. Shops fry it fresh in oil and serve it hot with soy sauce, green onion and ginger. A tasting of Tochio aburaage is included. You can also walk the old street with its snow-covered arcades, called gangi.
Next we drive to the coast at Teradomari. Its fish market street, often called the fish Ameyoko, is a row of shops selling crab, squid, shellfish and fish from the Sea of Japan. Many shops grill seafood on skewers that you can eat as you walk. You have time to choose your own lunch here.
In the afternoon we stop at the beach to see the Sea of Japan, then pass through Nagaoka on the way home.
Food notes: Tochio aburaage is plant-based, made from soybeans. This tour is not halal certified. The shops do not check cooking oils or sauces for halal. Fish and seafood are easy to find.
We drive back to your hotel in Tokyo in the evening. The tour is about 12 hours in total.

Many shops close in the late afternoon If the Teradomari fish market street is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the seafood market at Pier Bandai in Niigata city Halal is not possible on this tour. Tochio fried tofu is plant-based. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
