The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kurobe Dam stands 186 m high in the Northern Alps. It is the tallest dam in Japan. It was built in the 1950s and 1960s in very hard conditions, and the work is still remembered as one of the great building stories of Japan. From late June to mid October, water is released from the dam in a wide spray, often with a rainbow in it.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive west to Omachi in Nagano, about 4 hours. In the afternoon we visit the Omachi Alpine Museum, which tells the story of the Northern Alps and the people who climbed and worked in them. Entry is included. You stay overnight in Omachi.
On Day 2 we start early and drive up to Ogizawa Station, the Nagano gateway of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. From here the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus runs through the mountain to Kurobe Dam in about 16 minutes. Your return bus ticket is included.
At the dam you climb to the viewing deck, walk across the top of the dam and watch the water discharge in season. There is time to look at the lake and the peaks around it. Then we take the bus back to Ogizawa and drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.
We use only the Nagano side of the route and return the same way, so there is no need to send luggage.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One group per van, for 1 to 6 people.
