The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Takato Castle Ruins Park in Ina, Nagano, is one of the best known cherry blossom spots in Japan. About 1,500 Takato Kohigan cherry trees grow inside the old castle grounds. Their flowers are small and a deeper pink than the common Somei Yoshino, and this type grows almost only here. When they open together, the park looks pink from every side.
This tour runs only in the blossom season, usually in the first half to the middle of April. We pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo early in the morning and drive west, about 3.5 to 4 hours, through the mountains of Yamanashi and into the Ina Valley.
At Takato we walk up into the castle ruins. The park entry fee during the blossom festival is included. You have about two hours to walk under the trees, cross the red Oka bridge and look out over the valley with the snow-capped Central Alps behind. Takato town below the park has small shops and food stalls during the festival.
After the park we have a short walk in Takato town, then drive back through the Ina Valley. On the way we stop for a break with views of the Southern Alps.
We arrive back at your hotel in Tokyo in the evening. The tour is about 12 hours in total, with about 7.5 hours of driving. Roads near the park are busy in peak season, and we start early to beat the traffic.
