The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Takeda Shingen was one of the strongest warlords of the Sengoku period. He ruled Kai, today's Yamanashi, from Kofu. This day trip follows his story through the places that still carry his name.
We pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive west, about 2 hours. Our first stop is Takeda Shrine. It stands on the site of the Takeda family's main residence, Tsutsujigasaki. You can still see the old moats and earth walls around the shrine. A small treasure hall shows items linked to the clan. Entry is included.
Next we have lunch together: hoto, the thick flat noodles cooked in a miso pot with pumpkin and vegetables. It is the local dish of Yamanashi and Shingen is said to have fed it to his soldiers. Hoto lunch is included. A vegetarian version can usually be made; dietary needs can be added in the booking form. The lunch is not halal certified.
In the afternoon we walk up Maizuru Castle Park, the ruins of Kofu Castle. The stone walls were built after the Takeda family fell, and from the top you see Kofu city and, on a clear day, Mount Fuji. Then we drive to Erinji Temple in Koshu. This is the Takeda family temple, with Shingen's grave and a fine Edo-period garden. Garden entry is included.
We drive back to your hotel in Tokyo in the evening. The tour is about 10 hours in total, with about 4 hours of driving.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One group per van, for 1 to 6 people.
If a temple or treasure hall is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
