A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Horai Bridge in Shimada, Shizuoka crosses the wide Oi River for 897 m. It is listed by Guinness as the world's longest wooden walking bridge. Walking across the old wooden boards, with the river below and tea hills ahead, is calm and beautiful.
This private day trip takes you from Tokyo to Shimada. After the bridge, you drive up to the Makinohara plateau above Kanaya, one of the biggest green tea areas in Japan. Neat rows of tea bushes cover the hills, and on clear days you may see Mt Fuji. You enjoy a green tea tasting, which is included.
Your guide can also show you the old stone-paved slope of the Tokaido road at Kanaya, where travellers once climbed toward the tea hills. The bridge was built in 1879 so that farmers could reach new tea fields across the river, so the bridge and the tea hills tell one story.
Lunch is your choice in the tea area. Halal-certified restaurants are rare in this area, so lunch may need to be simple.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your group of 1 to 6 people rides in one van with one English-speaking driver-guide, who also speaks Hindi and Urdu. No other guests ever join.
The tour takes about 11 hours, with around 3 hours of driving each way.
If Horai Bridge is closed on your date because of high water or weather, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the tea terraces of Makinohara and the old stone-paved Tokaido slope at Kanaya.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
