The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Deep in the foothills of the Southern Alps in Shizuoka, the Sumata Gorge hides one of Japan's most beautiful bridges. Yume no Tsuribashi, the Dream Suspension Bridge, hangs over a lake of bright turquoise water. Few visitors make it this far.
On this 2-day private trip your van takes you up the Oi River valley to the Sumatakyo Onsen area. From there it is a walk of about 10 to 15 minutes to the bridge. You can also walk the forest trail along the gorge, with other small hanging bridges.
The night is in the Kawane area. On Day 2 you see the green tea terraces of Kawane, then stop at Horai Bridge in Shimada, the world's longest wooden walking bridge, before the drive home.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your group of 1 to 6 people rides in one van with one English-speaking driver-guide, who also speaks Hindi and Urdu. No other guests ever join.
Mountain roads in the valley are narrow and some sections may need a local shuttle; any shuttle and local fees are included. The best season is April to November. Autumn colours make the gorge busy.
If the Dream Bridge or the road to it is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Kawane tea terraces and walk longer along the Oi River at Horai Bridge.
Day 1 Pickup in Tokyo, drive to the Oi River valley, Sumata Gorge and Yume no Tsuribashi, night in Kawane
