The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kasumigaura in Ibaraki is Japan's second-largest lake. Fishermen here once used hobikisen, boats with one huge white sail that pulled a net sideways across the water. They were retired, then brought back for demonstration sailings.
THE BOATS. In season (July to December) we watch the sail boats from the shore or a sightseeing boat. Out of season we visit the lake museum that tells their story.
THE LAKE. We walk or cycle part of the lakeshore path and stop in Tsuchiura, a castle town on the lake.
LAKE FOOD. Lunch is lake fish and lotus root, both local specialities.
This is a private tour. Only your group in the vehicle.
Sail boat demonstrations run on set days. We will tell you before the tour whether one runs on your date.
If the sail boat demonstration does not take place on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the lake museum that tells their story.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
