The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Gyoda in Saitama holds the Sakitama Kofun Group, nine large burial mounds from the 5th to 7th centuries. One of them held a sword with a gold inscription that is now a national treasure.
The mounds. You can climb some of the mounds and see the park from above. The museum shows the finds.
Oshi Castle. The castle held out against a famous siege in 1590. It was rebuilt as a museum.
Tabi town. Gyoda once made most of Japan's tabi, the split-toe socks. We see the old storehouses and a tabi shop.
