The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Yamba Dam in Naganohara, Gunma, was planned in the 1950s and finished in 2020. Its reservoir flooded part of a hot spring town, which was rebuilt higher up the valley. The dam is now one of Japan's most talked-about engineering sites.
The dam. We walk the dam crest, visit the dam information centre, and look down the concrete face into the valley. Japan has a whole hobby around dams, including free collector cards given out at each dam, and your guide will make sure you get yours.
The gorge. Below the dam is the Agatsuma Gorge, with cliffs, rapids and a walking path. We walk a section of it.
The town. Kawarayu Onsen was moved up the hill when the valley was flooded. We finish there with a foot bath and a look at how a town is rebuilt.

Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
