Road-day snapshot

This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.

The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Most visitors to Nikko see the same three things. This private day trip takes you to the part of Nikko City almost no one visits: Ashio, a mountain valley that was once the industrial engine of modern Japan.

Your driver-guide collects you from your Tokyo hotel in an exclusive Toyota Alphard or Vellfire class minivan, reserved for your group alone. You travel north into Tochigi and up the Watarase river valley, arriving at the Ashio Copper Mine as it opens.

At the mine, a small trolley train carries you 700 metres into the Tsudo shaft, a designated national historic site. Inside the cool tunnel, life-sized displays show how miners worked here across four centuries, from hand tools to mechanised extraction. Above ground, exhibits cover the smelter, the first electric trolley in the country, and the minting of Kan’ei Tsuho copper coins.

The story here is not only industrial. By 1884 Ashio was Japan’s most productive copper mine, supplying around 40 percent of national output, and the run-off poisoned the Watarase river and the farmland along it. The campaign led by Tanaka Shozo, who took the farmers’ case directly to the Meiji Emperor, is remembered as the beginning of Japan’s environmental movement. Your guide walks you through what happened and what the reforestation programme started in 1957 has since restored.

You also stop at the Furukawa Bridge, a steel truss bridge completed in 1890 and now a National Important Cultural Property, built to carry ore out of the valley.

The return drive follows the Watarase valley, green in summer and deep red in autumn. As this is a private tour for up to 6 guests, the pace is yours and there is no group to keep up with. Your driver-guide can assist in English, Hindi, Punjabi, or Urdu.

What you pay is what you pay

The price you see is the full price for your whole group. The private minivan, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the whole day are all included. Mine admission and the trolley ride are about 830 yen per person, paid at the entrance. There are no per-person supplements, no booking fees, and your driver will never ask you for extra money on the day.

Flexible day

This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.

Said plainly

This private tour lasts approximately 12 hours door to door, including around 3 hours of driving each way between Tokyo and Ashio. Departure is early so you can reach the mine near opening time. The mine tunnel stays cool year-round at about 13C, so bring a light jacket even in summer and wear comfortable shoes for uneven ground. We accept bookings only for scheduled operating dates. If the mine closes unexpectedly after you book, we will contact you promptly and offer a full refund for the affected booking. Snow, heavy rain, traffic, or other safety conditions may require adjustments to the route or timing. The price you see is the full price for your whole group. Mine admission, the trolley ride, tolls, fuel and parking are already included. There are no per-person supplements, no booking fees and nothing extra to pay your driver on the day. The day is flexible: to skip a stop, stay longer or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day.
