Road-day snapshot

This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.

The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Across the water from Tokyo, an hour away by the bridge-and-tunnel Aqualine, is a mountain that was quarried into a sawblade and a Buddha carved out of what was left. Nokogiriyama is one of the strangest and most spectacular places within reach of the city, and it is on almost no tour.

We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive out over Tokyo Bay on the Aqualine, stopping at Umihotaru, the artificial island where the bridge dives into the tunnel, for the view back to the city and out to Fuji. On the Chiba side we drive down the coast to Kanaya and take the ropeway up Nokogiriyama, Sawtooth Mountain.

The top is the grounds of Nihon-ji temple, spread over the whole mountainside. Your guide leads you to the Jigoku Nozoki, the Hell Peek, a rock spur that hangs out over a 100-metre vertical quarry wall – you stand on the tip and look straight down. Then along the cliff paths past the 1,500 stone arhat statues, many with their heads knocked off in the anti-Buddhist riots of the 1870s, and down to the Daibutsu: 31 metres tall, carved into the cliff in 1783 and the largest pre-modern stone Buddha in Japan, more than twice the height of the one at Kamakura.

Lunch is at Kanaya port, famous for its aji horse mackerel, at a harbour restaurant. In the afternoon we drive back up the coast with a stop at Futtsu Cape, a sand spit reaching into the bay with a viewing tower and Fuji across the water, before crossing the Aqualine home.

What you pay is what you pay

The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. The ropeway, temple entry and lunch are paid by each guest on the day.

Good to know

The mountain paths are stone steps, a lot of them, and the Hell Peek is not for anyone afraid of heights – it can be skipped. The ropeway stops in strong wind; the road to the top is an alternative.

Flexible day

This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.

Choose with confidence

Is this the right journey for your group?

Excellent fit if

  • Jigoku Nozoki Hell Peek - a rock ledge hanging over a 100-metre quarry wall
  • Nihon-ji Daibutsu - Japan's largest stone Buddha at 31 metres
  • 1,500 stone arhat statues on the mountain cliff paths
  • Cross Tokyo Bay on the Aqualine with a stop at Umihotaru island
  • Kanaya harbour seafood lunch - private van from your Tokyo hotel

Said plainly

Nihon-ji's paths are stone steps with a lot of up and down; wear good shoes and allow your own pace. The Hell Peek ledge is optional. The ropeway may stop in strong wind, in which case we drive to the upper car park instead. Ropeway, entry and lunch are paid by you on the day. Pickup and drop-off can be changed on request at no extra cost. Travelling with small children? Tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm the child-seat arrangement for your date. The day is flexible: to skip a stop, stay longer or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day.
