Todoroki Valley & Farmhouses - Private Tokyo Tour

Tokyo has one valley. Todoroki is a kilometre of forest gorge cut by a small river through the Setagaya suburbs, ten minutes from the shopping streets and completely hidden from them. A boardwalk follows the stream under a canopy of trees to a temple, a waterfall and a tea house; in summer it is five degrees cooler than the road above.

We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive to the head of the valley. Your guide walks you down through the gorge – the Golf Bridge, the Buddhist cave shrine, the Fudo waterfall where ascetics still stand under the water, Todoroki Fudoson temple at the top of the stairs and the garden with its bamboo grove and wisteria trellis. We stop for matcha and sweets at the riverside tea house.

Then across the Tama River to Kawasaki and the Nihon Minka-en, an open-air museum of 25 real farmhouses, a village shrine, a water mill and a kabuki stage, all dismantled in their home villages across Japan and rebuilt on this wooded hillside. Most are 200 to 300 years old; the thatched roofs from the snow country are steep as tents, the ones from Kyushu are low and wide. Inside, hearths are lit and volunteers show how the houses were lived in. The park around it, Ikuta Ryokuchi, has a rose garden, a planetarium and a science museum for children, and a Fujiko F. Fujio Museum next door if you have booked it.

Lunch is soba in one of the farmhouses. We are back at your hotel by mid afternoon.

What you pay is what you pay

The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Minka-en entry tickets are included in the price. Lunch is optional – bring your own or buy on the day.

Good to know

Todoroki Valley has steps and an unpaved path; easy for most people, not suitable for wheelchairs. The Minka-en is closed on Mondays. If it is closed on your date we will tell you before the tour and you can choose a substitute stop of the same type or a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. This is a short day with an easy pace – good for jet lag, small children and older travellers.

Flexible day

This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.
