Road-day snapshot
This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Izu is where Tokyo goes to the sea. It is a peninsula of volcanic cliffs, hot springs and forest, two and a half hours from the city, and it is almost impossible to see without a car. In a private van it is one long, beautiful day.
We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive down the coast to Jogasaki, where a lava flow from Mount Omuro met the Pacific 4,000 years ago and froze into black cliffs. A path runs along the top, over the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge with the waves breaking 23 metres below, to a white lighthouse you can climb.
From there we follow the river inland to the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls, a chain of falls in a forest gorge linked by a walking path, with the bronze statues of the Dancing Girl of Izu from the famous novel along the way. Lunch is fresh wasabi and soba, or the grilled fish the valley is known for.
In the afternoon we cross the peninsula to Shuzenji, the oldest hot-spring town in Izu, founded by the monk Kukai in 807. We walk the red bridges over the Katsura River, the bamboo forest path and the temple where Shogun Minamoto no Yoriie was murdered, and stop for a free foot bath at Tokko no Yu, the spring Kukai is said to have struck from the rock. Then the drive back to Tokyo in the evening.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. The lighthouse, any onsen you choose and your lunch are paid by each guest on the day.
Good to know
This is a long day with about five hours of driving in total; the van is comfortable and there are stops. Kawazu’s early cherry blossom (Kawazu-zakura) blooms in February and the town is very busy then.
Flexible day
This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.

Is this the right journey for your group?
Excellent fit if
- Jogasaki lava cliffs and the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge over the sea

Said plainly
This is a long day, about 12 hours with roughly 5 hours of driving in total. The cliff path has steps and the waterfall trail is about 2 km on forest paths; wear comfortable shoes. In February the Kawazu cherry blossom festival makes the area very crowded. Lunch and any entries are paid by you on the day. Pickup and drop-off can be changed on request at no extra cost. Travelling with small children? Tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm the child-seat arrangement for your date. The day is flexible: to skip a stop, stay longer or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day.
