Gunma Falls & Ikaho Onsen - Private Day Tour from Tokyo
Fukiware Falls, a real Scottish castle rebuilt in the Japanese hills, the 365 stone steps of Ikaho Onsen and Haruna Lake. Our home prefecture, on no other tour. One fixed price per group.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Gunma is where our company is based, and we have never understood why the tour buses drive straight through it. This day shows you the places our own families go on a Sunday.
We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive north for about two hours. The first stop is Fukiware Falls, a river that suddenly drops seven metres through a 30-metre-wide crack in the rock – the locals call it the Niagara of the East. A path along the gorge gives you the view from above and from the water.
Next is Lock Heart Castle, a genuine 19th-century Scottish stone castle that was taken apart in Edinburgh, shipped to Japan and rebuilt piece by piece in the Gunma hills. It is odd, romantic and full of photo spots, and a favourite location for Japanese TV dramas.
After lunch we drive to Ikaho Onsen, a hot-spring town built on a staircase. Its 365 stone steps climb past shops, inns and the old bathhouses to Ikaho Shrine at the top; there are free foot baths on the way and a rust-red spring you can drink from. We finish at Haruna Lake, the crater lake under Mount Haruna, with a stop at Haruna Shrine’s cliff-hugging halls before the drive back to Tokyo.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Castle entry, any onsen you choose and your lunch are paid by each guest on the day.
Good to know
The Ikaho steps are a real climb – take it slowly, there are benches and foot baths. Autumn colour at Ikaho’s red Kajika Bridge peaks in early November. Roads around Haruna can close in heavy snow; if so your guide substitutes another stop or you may cancel for a full refund.
Flexible day
This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.
Choose with confidence
Is this the right journey for your group?
Excellent fit if
- Fukiware Falls - the Niagara of the East, seen from above and beside the water
- Lock Heart Castle - a real Scottish castle rebuilt stone by stone in Gunma
- Climb the 365 stone steps of Ikaho Onsen with free foot baths on the way
- Haruna Lake and the cliffside halls of Haruna Shrine
- Guide who lives in Gunma - private van from your Tokyo hotel
Said plainly
This is a walking day with steps at Ikaho and paths at the falls; wear comfortable shoes. Gunma is cooler than Tokyo - bring a layer. In heavy snow some mountain roads close; your guide substitutes another stop, or you can choose a full refund for the affected booking. Entry fees and lunch are paid by you on the day. Pickup and drop-off can be changed on request at no extra cost. Travelling with small children? Tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm the child-seat arrangement for your date. The day is flexible: to skip a stop, stay longer or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day.
