Okutama Cave & Mitake - Private Day Tour from Tokyo
Tokyo's wild west: a limestone cave with underground halls, a mountain shrine reached by cable car, an emerald reservoir and a sake brewery on the river. All inside Tokyo. One fixed price per group.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Tokyo is not only skyscrapers. Its western third is mountains, forest and one deep river valley, and it takes just ninety minutes in a private van to get from Shinjuku to a place where the only sounds are water and birds.
We collect you at your hotel and drive west to Nippara Limestone Cave, the largest cave in the Kanto region. A lit path takes you 800 metres into the mountain through halls with names like the Death Valley and the Twelve Bodhisattvas; it is 11 degrees inside in every season. From there we drive along the shore of Lake Okutama, the emerald reservoir that supplies Tokyo’s drinking water, with a stop on the Ogouchi Dam.
Lunch is in the valley, then the cable car up Mount Mitake to Musashi-Mitake Shrine, a mountain-top sanctuary founded 2,000 years ago where wolves are worshipped as guardians and the priests still bless dogs. The village around it is a cluster of pilgrim lodges with views over the Kanto plain to the Tokyo Skytree on a clear day.
On the way back we stop at Ozawa Brewery in Sawai, making sake on the riverbank since 1702, for a tasting and a walk on the river path. We are back in central Tokyo by the early evening.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Cave entry, the cable car, sake tasting and lunch are paid by each guest on the day.
Good to know
The cave has steep stairs and low ceilings in places; not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Autumn colour in the Mitake valley peaks in mid November.
Flexible day
This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.

Is this the right journey for your group?
Excellent fit if
- Nippara Limestone Cave - 800 metres of lit underground halls
- Lake Okutama and the Ogouchi Dam - Tokyo's emerald reservoir
- Cable car to Musashi-Mitake Shrine, the wolf-guardian sanctuary
- Sake tasting at Ozawa Brewery, on the river since 1702

Said plainly
The cave is 11 degrees inside with steep, wet stairs - bring a jacket and wear shoes with grip. The Mitake cable car and a 25-minute walk lead to the shrine. Mountain roads may close after typhoons or heavy snow; your guide substitutes another stop, or you can choose a full refund for the affected booking. Entry fees, cable car and lunch are paid by you on the day. Pickup and drop-off can be changed on request at no extra cost. Travelling with small children? Tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm the child-seat arrangement for your date. The day is flexible: to skip a stop, stay longer or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day.
