Nikko & Edo Wonderland - Private Day Tour from Tokyo
The gold-carved Toshogu Shrine in the morning, then an afternoon of samurai, ninja and street theatre at Edo Wonderland. A private van day for families from Tokyo. One price for our service.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Nikko has the most lavish shrine in Japan and, twenty minutes down the road, a whole Edo-period town where the ninja are actors and the children can dress as samurai. Put together, they make the best family day out from Tokyo.
We collect you in the morning and drive two hours north. The Toshogu Shrine is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who unified Japan, and his heirs spent the equivalent of billions decorating it: the Yomeimon gate with its 500 carvings, the sleeping cat, the three wise monkeys, and the cedar-lined stone steps up to the tomb. Your guide walks you through it, explaining what the carvings mean, before the tour buses arrive.
After lunch we drive to Edo Wonderland. It is a theme park with no rides – instead it is a full recreation of a 17th-century town where you watch ninja shows, an oiran procession and a magistrate’s court comedy, throw shuriken, and rent period costumes so the children spend the afternoon as samurai and princesses.
We drive you back to your Tokyo hotel in the early evening.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Toshogu admission, Edo Wonderland admission, costume rental and lunch are paid by each guest on the day.
Good to know
Edo Wonderland is closed on Wednesdays and for a maintenance break of a few weeks in January and February; we check the park calendar for your date before confirming. If Edo Wonderland is closed on your date and we cannot operate the tour as described, you get a guaranteed full refund of your booking. Toshogu involves around 200 stone steps to the tomb; the main halls are reachable without them. Autumn colour in Nikko peaks late October to early November and the roads are busy.
Flexible day
This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.
