Boso Peninsula Private Day Tour: Giant Buddha, Sea Cliffs and Canal Town
A giant stone Buddha most visitors never hear about, a cliff-edge viewpoint over Tokyo Bay and the canal streets of Little Edo Sawara, all in one relaxed private day.
Road-day snapshot
The Aqua-Line crossing is about an hour from central Tokyo. The ropeway and temple come first while the light is good; Sawara is the relaxed afternoon.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Most visitors to Tokyo never make it to the Boso Peninsula, even though it is one of the closest genuine escapes from the city, just over an hour away across the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. This private, door-to-door day takes you to the quiet Chiba coast and its canal towns with your own English-speaking driver-guide.
Ride the Nokogiriyama ropeway for sweeping views over Tokyo Bay, walk to Nihonji Temple and its 31-metre stone Buddha, larger than the famous one in Kamakura, and stand at the cliff-edge Jigoku Nozoki viewpoint. After lunch in the fishing town of Kanaya, stroll the Edo-period canal streets of Sawara, Little Edo, with an optional traditional boat ride.

Said plainly
The Nokogiriyama ropeway closes in strong wind; we then drive to the summit car park instead. The Sawara boat ride is optional, paid on the day and subject to availability.

Questions
Frequently asked
Why is this tour limited to four guests?
The van and the ropeway timings work best for a small group. For five or six guests, choose one of our six-seat tours or ask us about a second vehicle.
Is the Buddha really bigger than the Kamakura one?
Yes. The Nihonji Buddha is about 31 metres tall, carved into the rock face; the Kamakura bronze Buddha is about 13 metres.
What if the ropeway is closed?
In strong wind the ropeway stops. We drive to the summit car park instead, so you still reach the temple and the viewpoint.
What is the cancellation policy?
